Over the past ten years the Waihi Miners have developed their own unique style of roller hockey, which has consistently qualified their teams to play in the National tournament, often with medal results, and earned the respect of their competitors throughout the country.
The Waihi Miners are consistently suppling the central region representative teams with 15 - 20 players each season now, one of the highest per capita in the country.
From those representative players the New Zealand teams are selected and the Waihi Miners have 5 -7 players consistently selected to play the international. These representative players fund themselves to these tournaments and often if the tournament is in Australia or the South Island, they do not always trial due to lack of funds.
This now rests with increasing player numbers through the under 10 grades and a more aggressive marketing of the sport through schools and skating nights and secondly increasing the cash flow of the club.
While the club can and needs to increase numbers, a dramatic increase, which is what the club requires to progress over the next ten years and to really promote Waihi and inline hockey, the present facilities available court time would not cope with the volume of teams.
Increasing the clubs cash flow is vital to provide more equipment for novice players, coaches and league teams and to subsidise the excessive travel and accommodation costs of these teams and representative players. More than half this expense is due to the present facilities rink size being to small, inadequate player benches and lack of safety barriers above the dasher boards which means league games above the under 12 grade are not permitted to be played in Waihi.
